I’m the type of person to leap before looking. Take this blog, for example. I decided to start one – a task I’ve intended on doing to for a while – and didn’t consider what the blog itself would be about until after I started. So far, all I have is a list of things my blog will NOT be about.
My blog will not be about movies. At my job my clients are movie studios (I basically publicize movies for a living). But, that does not mean I want to surround myself with the subject 24/7. Plus, as a publicist, I’m an information provider, not a news source. My blog will also not be about music. Besides my "day job," I publicize an ensemble I co-founded and help run, Anaphora, but that does not mean I should start blogging my musical opinion.
I’m at the point in my life where I’m mad at myself for not feeding the passions I’ve had since I was a kid: writing, dance and art. As I’ve previously said, I think creative expression is vital to our existence. I think that’s why, as an adult, I chose to work in PR. Any story I pitch or promotion I set up starts with me brainstorming crazy, off the wall, artistically “brilliant” news angles and stunts, which then gets channeled into a nice feature or fun bar night.
Here’s a (slightly outdated) example of the “results” of my PR skillz AKA blatant self-promotion: Chicagoist article
