I told all my friends my total score was 1050.

It wasn't until YEARS later that I realized my score was actually 1150.

I took a career test once. Scores were calculated immediately after the exam and my results were: I'm capable of any career choice. Upon learning this I went up to the test administrator and asked for an explanation. He looked down at my score, looked back up at me and said "you can be anything you want to be." I took the test to find a specific career choice and I was told I could do anything I wanted with my life and I'd be good at it! (Lame, right?) I left the room feeling very confused and decided I either took the test wrong or the whole thing was a sham.

It wasn't until MUCH later that I sat, reflected and realized "I can be anything I want to be."

I often wonder if I deserve those test results...

Away We Go

AWAY WE GO stars John Krasinski ("The Office") and Maya Rudolph ("SNL") plus it's directed by Sam Mendes ("American Beauty," "Revolutionary Road). What's even luckier is the fact that I work for a fabulous company. I assumed the business was great before I started working there and being an "insider" reconfirms my suspicions.

This past weekend, the upper management team flew all 60 of the firm’s employees in its Publicity/Promotions division into LA for a two-day "Marketing Summit." Every presentation was uniquely amazing. CEOs and Editors from some of the nation's top websites participated in a variety of panels and my job’s owner, president and division heads led candid and open discussions where every employee felt comfortable enough to ask a question, make a suggestion, participate, etc at any time. It was remarkable.

As cheesy as it sounds, there is a song I hope you’ll take the time to listen to, which sums up the weekend more poetically. The lyrics are posted below.

The first star I see may not be a star
You can't do a thing but wait
So let's wait for one more...

And the time's such clumsy time
I'm deciding if it's time

I'm careful but not sure how it goes
You can lose yourself in your courage

When the time we have now ends
When the big hand goes round again...

Can you still feel the butterflies?
Can you still hear the last goodnight?

And the mindless comfort grows
When I'm alone with my 'great' plans

And this is what you said gets her through it
‘If I don't let myself be happy now then when?’
If not now when
The time we have now ends
And when the big hand goes round again...

Can you still feel the butterflies?
Can you still hear the last goodnight?

I close my eyes and believe
Wherever you are
Angel for when the time we have now ends
And when the big hand goes round again

Can you still feel the butterflies?
Can you still hear the last goodnight?
Now ends?

It is what it is...

I’m the type of person to leap before looking. Take this blog, for example. I decided to start one – a task I’ve intended on doing to for a while – and didn’t consider what the blog itself would be about until after I started. So far, all I have is a list of things my blog will NOT be about.

My blog will not be about movies. At my job my clients are movie studios (I basically publicize movies for a living). But, that does not mean I want to surround myself with the subject 24/7. Plus, as a publicist, I’m an information provider, not a news source. My blog will also not be about music. Besides my "day job," I publicize an ensemble I co-founded and help run, Anaphora, but that does not mean I should start blogging my musical opinion.

I’m at the point in my life where I’m mad at myself for not feeding the passions I’ve had since I was a kid: writing, dance and art. As I’ve previously said, I think creative expression is vital to our existence. I think that’s why, as an adult, I chose to work in PR. Any story I pitch or promotion I set up starts with me brainstorming crazy, off the wall, artistically “brilliant” news angles and stunts, which then gets channeled into a nice feature or fun bar night.

Here’s a (slightly outdated) example of the “results” of my PR skillz AKA blatant self-promotion: Chicagoist article

New Kid on the Blog

I figure before I dive head first into the wide world of blogging, I should give my potential readers out there a brief introduction…

I have been living in Chicago since 2005, working as publicist with Terry Hines & Associates (www.terryhines.com) since 2007 and cofounded the Anaphora Ensemble (www.AnaphoraEnsemble.com) with 3 friends in 2008.

I'm an ex-dancer, went to a high school of performing arts in Las Vegas and consider myself a writer at heart. I happen to think that artistic expression is a vital part of life. I also love reading, meeting new people, and cooking, but I’m sure all that will come up in the entries to follow.

Oh, and I can be kind of intense… ☺ I want to hear from you, either by commenting on this blog or via email at dell.lisa@gmail.com.
